What is a prosthodontist?
A prosthodontist is a dentist who specializes in treating and handling dental and facial problems that involve restoring missing tooth and jaw structures. A prosthodontist is an expert in cosmetics, dental implants, crowns, bridges, dentures, temporomandibular disorders, advanced technology, and more.

How is a prosthodontist different from a dentist?
A dentist is trained to provide a wide variety of treatment including advanced cosmetic and restorative solutions. A prosthodontist, however, has at least 3 additional years of advanced training and education beyond what is required to become a dentist.

What is board certification?
A board-certified prosthodontist has successfully passed a rigorous examination conducted by the American Board of Prosthodontics. A re-certification is required every eight years to ensure that the prosthodontist is current in practice that affects the specialty and patient care.

How do I know whether my prosthodontist is board certified?
The American Board of Prosthodontics maintains a list of active board-certified prosthodontists. You can access the list at https://www.abpros.org/find-prosthodontist.
